A Interação do Poeta com os Povos e Culturas Orientais
"One of the most promising lines of research into Luís de Camões’ life and work is his interaction with Eastern peoples and cultures, from India, Arabia, Southeast Asia, the Spice Islands and China. Today, these interactions are more valued than in the past, when they tended to be forgotten, or considered only as a curious and exotic adornment of his life and poetry.
Camões' poems certainly provide a curious portrait of the Portuguese speaking communities in Asia, specially, in Goa, and the promises and obstacles in the relationships between settlers and people of different cultures. Combining history, poetry and biography allows us to approach Camões’ oeuvre not only as art, but also as a significant source for the study of the early Portuguese presence in Asia."
